The Crucifixion, c. 1310-1320
Master of the Medici Chapel Altarpiece
Italian
egg tempera, silver and gold leaf on wood, likely poplar
50.5 x 27.7 cm
Gift of Mrs. Victor Lynch-Staunton, Montreal, 1972
National Gallery of Canada (no. 17122)
Stylistic similarities between this painting and an altarpiece of the Virgin and Child in the Medici Chapel in Santa Croce, Florence, have led scholars to conclude that both are by the same artist, who has been assigned the name "Master of the Medici Chapel Altarpiece." Originally this panel formed part of a portable diptych used for private worship. Much of the silver background has worn away, revealing the red preparation layer beneath.
