Public study groups
The following groups are organized by the volunteers of the National Gallery of Canada. They provide art education programs to the general public and Gallery Members. The variety of groups caters to the involvement of participants, and depends on demand and the willingness of volunteers to organize the programs. Please contact the Volunteers’ office for details and fees.
Wednesday Morning Lecture Series and Les Mercredis culturels (in French)
From September to April, volunteers organize a series of lectures in English and French open to the public. This year, lectures will focus on the National Collection, upcoming exhibits and our in-house expertise. All lectures are held on Wednesday mornings at 10:30. Please see the attached schedule for dates and topics (buy tickets here).
For Members Only
The following activities are restricted to Members of the National Gallery of Canada. Please contact the Volunteers’ office for details and fees.
Third Thursday Study Group
Members of this group are interested in art and want to improve their understanding of the art of various periods. Participants research and present illustrated talks in an informal setting, according to a pre-determined topic. The 2013-2014 topic is “The Many Faces of Portraiture”. The group meets from September to May, in a seminar room at the Gallery. Group is limited to 25 members.
Know Your Gallery
Similar to the Third Thursday Study Group, Know Your Gallery invites working art lovers at 1:30 pm on the third Saturday of each month in a seminar room at the Gallery. Works in the collection are discussed and then visited in the galleries. Group is limited to 25 members.
Art in View
This program focuses on art and the artist and on the functions of the Gallery in acquisitions, conservation and the exhibition of works of art. Lecturers are experienced members of the arts community. Meetings are arranged in series of six consecutive weekly events, each with a lecture and a related Gallery visit, in both the Spring and the Fall. Members can choose a Wednesday or a Thursday series. Group is limited to 30 members.
