National Gallery exhibition honours winners of 2004 Governor General’s Awards

Ottawa, Canada - March 10, 2004

Le MBAC rend hommage aux lauréats 2004 des Prix du Gouverneur général

The National Gallery of Canada is pleased to pay tribute to the laureates of the 2004 Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts with a special exhibition. Works by the winners will be on view in the Contemporary Galleries from 12 March to 1 May 2004. Admission is free.

The Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts , which were announced by the Canada Council for the Arts on 3 March, are Canada’s foremost distinctions for artists who have created an outstanding body of work and have made a significant, long-term contribution to the development of the visual or media arts. The exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada offers visitors an opportunity to discover the works of the chosen artists.

The Canada Council for the Arts appoints an independent peer jury of artists and arts professionals from across Canada to select the winners of the Governor General’s Awards in Visual and Media Arts. The Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, is presenting the awards today in a ceremony at Rideau Hall.

The 2004 laureates are: Iain Baxter, Eric Cameron, Istvan Kantor, Garry Neill Kennedy, John Oswald, Ian Wallace and Tom Hill, who is the winner in the “Outstanding Contribution” category. In addition to a $15,000 prize, each laureate will receive an original artwork created by Nova Scotia ceramic artist Walter Ostrom, winner of the 2003 Saidye Bronfman Prize.

Downloadable images of the artists and selected works are available on the Canada Council’s Web site. To request images of works in the exhibition, please contact Anouk Hoedeman at 613.990.6835 or ahoedeman@gallery.ca.
