Sixth annual Alternafest concert series at the National Gallery of Canada on Labour Day Weekend

Ottawa, Canada - August 18, 2000

PRESS RELEASE

« La sixième édition annuelle de l'AlternaFest aura lieu au Musée des beaux-arts du Canada la fin de semaine de la fête du Travail »

The final musical extravaganza of the summer is once again taking place at the National Gallery of Canada on Labour Day weekend. Now in its sixth year, AlternaFest returns with a wide variety of sounds that sit outside of the mainstream, ranging from quirky pop to electronic ambience and from sly jazz to grooving funk. The series will take place from Saturday 2 to Monday 4 September 2000. There are 4 free performances per day beginning at 12:30 pm in the National Gallery of Canada's outdoor Amphitheatre. As well, a special ticketed concert by Jello Biafra will take place in the Gallery's indoor Auditorium on Saturday 2 September.

AlternaFest features the Ottawa debuts of several performers including Montreal's acclaimed Lullaby Baxter Trio, and Les Jardiniers as well as former Inbreds' frontman, Mike O'Neill. Rising stars like Hawksley Workman, The Dears, a quirky pop group that has the Montreal media raving, and local performers like Rise Ashen, Liquified, Werbo and Jim Bryson are also part of the mix. Musical veterans who continue to create new sounds like Astrogroove, The New Deal, and King Cobb Steelie will be crowd favourites. In case of inclement weather, the concerts will be moved inside the Gallery's Auditorium.

Jello Biafra brings his socio-political satire to the Gallery's Auditorium on Saturday 2 September for an evening appearance at 8 pm in the Gallery's Auditorium. Since the demise of his politically charged punk group The Dead Kennedys, Biafra has devoted much of his time to recording spoken-word observations on American culture and politics and to collaborative efforts with several bands like Vancouver's D.O.A. Tickets for Jello Biafra will cost $12 ($10 for Gallery Members) and will go on sale Saturday19 August at the National Gallery of Canada. Tickets may be ordered by phone by calling (613) 998-8888.
