Lorraine Gilbert's artistic practice combines her interest and training in environmental issues, forestry and biology, with her passion for photography. Her portraits of British Columbia tree planters and their working environment won her national acclaim in the mid-1990s. From 1995 to 2001, Gilbert was an active member of Boréal Art/Nature, an artist-run centre in the Laurentians in Québec, where she helped organize residencies and international projects for artists interested in nature. She has travelled most recently to Iceland and France. In 2003, Gilbert won the City of Ottawa's first Yousuf and Malak Karsh Award for her consistently developed and conceptually innovative photography. Gilbert teaches visual arts at the University of Ottawa, Concordia University, and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Born in France, she is now a resident of Ontario and Québec. |
