Harold E. Edgerton
Bullet (.30 caliber) Piercing an Apple, ca 1964

American Harold Edgerton took this photograph using a short exposure and a high-speed single-burst flash that he invented in 1937. Edgerton's technique allowed him to take photographs of phenomena that had never before been seen by the human eye. The combination of sharp detail, simple compositions, brilliant colour, and commonplace objects created images that continue to appeal.
