When taking a photograph, a flash can be used to fill in parts of a scene that would otherwise be in shadow. The built-in flashes on automatic cameras vary in terms of power, that is, the distance at which the flash can correctly expose the film. The speed of the film and the lens setting are other important considerations. This photograph was taken at night. A flash was used to illuminate the foreground.
