The albumen silver print was the most common photographic print process from the mid-1850s to the mid-1890s. Thin paper was coated with a layer of albumen (egg white). A solution of silver nitrate made it light sensitive. The paper was then exposed to daylight through a negative placed in contact with it. This image shows the warm tonal range typical of albumen prints. The photographer has achieved a natural looking portrait through his use of daylight. |
