Exposure

The exposure is the amount of time that light falls on the film.

With a short exposure, the shutter allows light into the camera for a fraction of a second, quickly capturing the image on film. A short exposure is used to photograph - and freeze - a moving light source or subject.

Short exposure

Long exposure

With a long exposure, the shutter allows light into the camera over a period of time, slowly drawing the image on the film. Movement of or by the light source or the subject is recorded.

Too much light on the film produces an overexposed negative. Not enough light produces an underexposed negative. By adjusting the shutter or aperture settings on the camera, the light meter reading can be overridden and the amount of light that falls on the film can be controlled.
