Light Sources

Photographers work with natural and artificial light.

Daylight is the most available light source. It varies with the season, weather conditions and time of day. On an overcast day, the rays from the sun are dispersed through the clouds and provide nearly shadowless lighting. On a bright sunny day, the light casts deep shadows.

There are three main sources of artificial light: incandescent electric lamps, fluorescent tubes and electronic flash. Artificial light gives the photographer more control than natural light.
