At the height of the daguerreotype period, exposure times were about half a minute. Daguerreotypists had a variety of devices in their studios to help sitters remain still. These included neck braces and small pieces of furniture on which sitters could literally "prop" themselves. In the best daguerreotype portraits, the sitter has a natural expression.
