Photography and the Camera Obscura

The photographic camera derives directly from the box camera obscura. By the 1660s, portable cameras obscura had many of the same features as photographic cameras, except that there was no way to record the images they produced.

More than 150 years passed before inventors developed methods to "fix," or make permanent, the images made by light. Photography was born.
