The relationships between humans and the physical world have preoccupied scholars and artists for millennia. Hungarian artist Laszlo Moholy-Nagy was fascinated by the effect of materials and surfaces on the appearance of light. He built a moving machine that projected lights and shadows onto a blank wall. This allowed him to explore the nature of light.
