Doc Snyder's House,
1931
FitzGerald, L.L.
oil on canvas
74.9 x 85.1 cm

Theme:

A sense of tranquility emanates from this cold snow-covered urban landscape. It captures the atmosphere of a winter day, when clear light defines every shape, and snow muffles every sound.

The painting is the result of two winters of intensive work by FitzGerald and depicts the house of Dr. Snyder, a dentist who lived next door to the artist on Lyle Street in the St. James neighbourhood of Winnipeg. In order to observe his subject more closely, FitzGerald worked outside part of the time in a small shed on runners, which he could move around his yard.
