In this work, Schaefer depicts a typical Ontario farmhouse, the kind of architecture that was found in the area of Hanover, Ontario where he lived during his youth on his grandparents' farm after his mother's death. Schaefer returned to this place year after year, especially in the summer months, to interpret the landscape's many moods and facets. The work's style evokes the drama and uneasy tensions of the Great Depression.
