Landscape, Hochelaga

Landscape, Hochelaga,
c. 1931
Fortin, Marc-Aurčle
oil on paperboard
80.8 x 85.4 cm

To paint this work, Fortin stood at the edge of one of the grassy promontories overlooking the Montreal suburb of Hochelaga.

A cluster of workers houses dominates this painting, where fences, balconies and laundry lines create an intense network of activity. Never simply recording what he saw, Fortin transformed the mundane vistas of Hochelaga into animated mosaics enlivened by joyful colour and dynamic form.
