This print illustrates the vision of Placidus, a Roman general to whom the crucified Christ appeared between the horns of a stag. Placidus converted to Christianity and was martyred for his beliefs under the emperor Hadrian. In the middle Ages, Saint Eustace was venerated as a patron of hunters.
