Summer Camp Scene

Summer Camp Scene,
c. 1974
Ashoona, Pitseolak
felt pen on wove paper
50.8 x 65.6 cm

Summer Camp Scene conjures up the pleasures of life on the land that Pitseolak so enjoyed. The busy activities of the characters are all set within a landscape scene. We easily recognize the tents made of animal skins stitched together, mounted on rods and held down at the base by rocks. While the women attend to domestic tasks, the men prepare for the hunt - further implied by the presence of the spear and harpoon - and the children play games with stones. Pitseolak included in her picture the owl and the wild goose, which were prized for their plumage.
