The North American Iceberg

The North American Iceberg,
Beam, Carl
acrylic, photo-serigraph, and graphite on plexiglas
213.6 x 374.1 cm

The North American Iceberg, a large work of acrylic paint and photo-serigraphs on plexiglas, is a response to the Art Gallery of Ontario's 1985 exhibition The European Iceberg. This show featured contemporary European works and raised concerns about how current European trends are often disregarded in the North American art repertoire. In his Iceberg, Beam draws attention to Aboriginal art, history, and culture that has been similarly marginalized. The work deals primarily with mainstream perceptions of Aboriginal people.
