Border in Four Parts

Border in Four Parts,
1977-1978
Falk, Gathie
oil on canvas
213.2 x 197.8 x 3.8 cm

Theme:

Border in Four Parts represents Falk's return to painting as well as her interest in the play of light and colour and in the forms and sensations of the everyday. Inspired by the appearance of her garden, especially the portion bordering the east side of the front yard, Falk began to take a series of documentary photos. She started at one end of the border, moved four steps to the right, and moved another four steps to the right, and so on. The content of each photographs significantly overlapped the next, so that together the photos constituted not only a panoramic view of the garden but also implied the element of time.
