1513
Dürer, Albrecht
engraving on laid paper, with japan paper borders
24.7 x 18.9 cm

Theme:

This etching, one of Dürer's most famous, presents a knight on horseback traveling through a treacherous landscape with Death and the Devil close on his heels. High above the Knight, on a craggy hilltop, lays a castle. The image has been interpreted as representing a Christian solider determinedly undergoing the trials of mortal life, to reach his celestial refuge.
