Algoma, North of Ontario

In the fall of 1919, Lawren Harris organized a trip to the Algoma region, north of Sault Ste. Marie, in northern Ontario. He invited two of his friends to join him, J. E. H. MacDonald and Franz Johnston, who later became members of the Group of Seven. The three of them travelled by train and explored the myriad landscapes of that vast region of rivers, tree-covered mountains and tranquil lakes.

"The detail in this country suggests a thousand themes for decoration, and of course, the ensemble is equally as beautiful as the detail."
Franz Johnston
