Saint Mark

Saint Mark's and the Clock Tower, Venice,
c. 1735-1737
oil on canvas
132.8 x 165.1 cm

In this painting, below a broad sweep of blue sky, Canaletto presents Venice's Piazza San Marco with its clock tower to the left and St. Mark's Basilic to the right. The square is named for Venice's patron saint. A distinctive sign reminds us of this: the winged lion standing imposingly at the top of the clock tower is the attribute of Saint Mark.
