144 copper plates
0.95 x 365.8 x 365.8 cm assembled flat; copper plates: .95 x 30.5 x 30.5 cm each

Interpretation:

The flatness of the square, which is barely distinguishable from the floor on which it is placed, emphasizes the interaction between gravity and weight. The presence of these works in a gallery setting creates a situation in which the viewer, moving through the space, becomes an active participant. The spectator is encouraged to view the work from above or walk on the metal plates to experience its qualities. The sculpture, like all of Andre's floor-bound pieces, activates the space above it. As the artist said in 1965: The function of sculpture is to seize and hold space... Rather than cutting into the material, I use the material to cut in space."
