Interpretation:

The goal of many portrait artists is to capture a realistic look of their sitter with all the subject's character. In this work, Lyman chose to concentrate on the strong colours and solid forms rather than descriptive detail. Lyman's modernist approach to painting came from his studies in Paris.
The critic, Paul Dumas, no doubt referring to the subject's detached bearing and severity, compared this portrait to an aristoctratic mask.
