Harris, Lawren S.
oil on canvas
101.8 x 122.3 cm

Interpretation:

Harris began painting urban scenes early in his career and always remained partial to street scenes. This view (also exhibited under the title Sunday Morning) is one of the works he created from 1909 to 1926. The cityscapes that Harris painted over his career trace the evolution of Toronto's middle-class neighbourhoods. Here, there are no cars or high-rise buildings. The Victorian houses in the background would later be transformed into rental buildings that would house new immigrants, and then be demolished and replaced with commercial buildings.
