Fafard has created numerous portraits of artists, including portraits of Paul Cézanne, Diego Rivera, Robert Arneson, August Renoir and Frida Kahlo. In 2006 Fafard discussed his interest in creating portraits of other artists: "The connection with the artist that I portray, it's not necessarily one [in which ] I feel that we are similar or that I have a kindred spirit with them. Nevertheless I feel that their life and work is important and one that I want to meditate upon'if I'm studying the work of an artist or the life of an artist I try to absorb a lot of their stuff [what] they are doing, the same way as a scholar who studies the work [and] tries to understand it tries to make sense of it. Sometimes doing the portrait is more to feed myself than to say anything about the person, but eventually, hopefully I will say something about the person.
