Interpretation:

It would be uncharacteristic for Dürer to produce a purely ornamental image without moral content; it can be assumed therefore that the elements used in this print were chosen specifically for their symbolic connections. The cock, an early morning riser, is often interpreted as an emblem of watchfulness and vigilance. The lion, though generally emblematic of strength, majesty, courage and fortitude also became a symbol for watchfulness due to a medieval belief that lions slept with their eyes open. It should also be noted that the lion came to be associated with the Resurrection and is sometimes used as a symbol of Christ. The helmet is an element of a soldier's amour. Armour is not only the symbol of chivalry it also suggests the Christian faith as protection against evil. Interpreted together these symbols suggest that this work is a metaphor of vigilance for, and loyalty to, the Christian faith.
