Composition:

Untitled (one of four diagonals) is created by an elastic cord stretched 12 metres from the upper corner of a room to the lower opposing corner, creating a diagonal that dissects the middle of the room. Although measurements were taken of the room and the elastic cord, Sandback insists that his lines are not governed by mathematical equations but rather by "intuitive desires" to produce an open composition with many possibilities.

In this unconventional way Sandback manipulates the line and the space to create volume. He states: “There are big “empty” spaces in between the lines. They’re no less material than the lines themselves.” The line heightens our awareness of the space. Once in the room, the viewer experiences different optical perspectives and a heightened awareness of his/her relationship to the space
