144 Copper Square is one of several squares that the artist made out of pre-cut metal plates laid flat on the floor. The number of plates used was determined by the size of the room. Composed purely of copper, it shows the distinct physical properties of its material weight, colour, lustre, and sound. While observing the water on a canoe trip in New Hampshire in 1965, Andre decided his sculpture had to be as level as water.
