254 pieces of felt

Composition:

Untitled (1967-68) is an early felt work made up of 254 pieces of felt cut from a single piece according to a mathematical sequence. Morris structured the cutting of the felt in order to eliminate any subjective decisions about the number and size of the felt strips, which vary in width from 3 to 4 centimetres. The overall shape of the assembled pile is created by the elements of chance, gravity, and weight. Morris gave the following instructions for installing the felt: "Mix the pieces thoroughly and heap on the floor with no special arrangement of the pieces." The random arrangement contrasts with the predetermined and logical order by which the felt strips were cut.
