Fire in the Port of Montreal
Fire in the Port of Montreal,
c. 1928
Fortin, Marc-Aurčle
oil on canvas
88.4 x 116.5 cm

In this painting, huge billows of black smoke mix with the clouds to engulf the upper part of the canvas. This nebulous mass eclipses the buildings and the Havre Bridge (under construction), which was renamed Jacques-Cartier Bridge in 1934. Fortin paints with clean, precise strokes, giving energy to the various elements of the work. As is often the case in his works, the human element is lost in the overall composition; although, in this one, the size of the construction workers reflects the magnitude of the project.
