Escher's model for this face was a gypsum (plaster) bust of his wife Jetta made by his friend Mario Montemurro around 1932.
The artist used four blocks to produce Rind, one for each colour (red, brown and grey-brown) and another for the black. This meant that each print required four successive impressions.
