After the artist has settled on the exact pose and positioning for his finished work, he methodically "scales up" from small maquette to what is in this case a much larger mold. Test casts work out how parts of the body function at a larger scale as well as how the artist arrived at realistic paint colour and glazes to depict dramatic traces of blood on the final cast.
