A.J. Casson

Born in Toronto in 1898, Alfred Joseph Casson's exposure to commercial art began at fifteen when he was hired by a lithography company. He came into contact with the Group of Seven artists in 1919 while working with Franklin Carmichael at Rous and Mann. Carmichael was an important influence on Casson, taking him on sketching trips and sharing with him his passion for watercolour. Invited to join the Group in 1926, Casson chose the villages of Ontario, rather than the wilderness, as his subject.
