Jean Paul Lemieux

Jean Paul Lemieux studied at the École des beaux-arts in Montreal between 1926 and 1934 and also spent time in Paris during this period. From 1937 to 1965, he taught at the École des beaux-arts in Quebec City. Often meditative and nostalgic, Lemieux's art integrates various influences, notably popular Quebec folk art, French artists such as Bonnard and old Italian masters. Over the years, Lemieux's paintings became simpler without ever becoming simplistic; rather they are symbolic and nostalgic. Today, Lemieux is considered to be one of Quebec's major painters.
