Jessie Oonark

Jessie Oonark was born in the interior, in the Back River area of the Kivalliq region, northwest of Hudson Bay.

Rescued from famine by the Royal Mounted Police, Oonark, a widow and the sole supporter of her family, was taken with her children to Baker Lake in the late 1950s and made her home there. She became a prolific artist, and made a large number of drawings for the Baker Lake print studio, which was founded in 1969. She also joined the sewing studio, where she first made parkas and later created wall hangings.
