Franz Johnston

Born in Toronto in 1888, Franz Johnston studied art at the Central Ontario School of Art. In 1908 he worked at Grip Limited, where he met the artists who would form the Group of Seven. Following a period of study in Philadelphia and a job in New York, Johnston returned to Canada in 1915, later taking a commission with the Canadian War Memorials to paint the Royal Air Force training for overseas duty. After the war he accompanied Harris and MacDonald on sketching trips in the Algoma region, north of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Johnston participated only in the first Group show of 1920, moving to Winnipeg in 1921.
