Canaletto

The son of a theatre designer, the Venetian painter Canaletto was immensely popular among wealthy travellers who wished to take home a particularly striking view as a souvenir of their travels in ltaly - the equivalent, for these affluent travellers, of the postcards and photographs of the modern-day tourist. A view of Venice was one of the most coveted trophies of the Grand Tour. Canaletto began to paint his Venetian views, or vedute, around 1723. His popularity in England was so great that he went to live there from 1746 to 1755.
