Seeing Math in Art

This lesson plan provides an introduction to the works of Canadian artists of the 1960s, 1970s and 1980's most of whom considered geometric principles in their two and three-dimensional art. All of the works are in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada.

Seeing Math in Art

The works by Canadian artists in this lesson plan present different approaches to abstraction and some of the artists considered geometric principles while others used mathematical theories.

The works of art featured in this lesson plan show an interest in abstraction and in mathematical principles. The artists challenged the traditional nature, function, and meaning of art, and in their investigation, changed the look of art in their time.
