Discus tertiary colours with the class. There are 6 tertiary colours: Yellow-orange, Orange-red, Red-violet (orchid), Blue-violet, Blue-green (turquiose) & Yellow-green (lime). Tertiary colours are obtained by mixing a Primary and a Secondary colour together.

Ask the students to make a self-portrait drawing based on their photograph directly onto the canvas.

Then ask the students to spend some time selecting and mixing their favourite tertiary colour. Using the tertiary colours, students will enhance their self-portrait in the same style as Woman with a White Collar, using bold brush strokes to accentuate the planes.The student will use the same colour for the background as the foreground.
