National Gallery of Canada (no. 6430)

Catherine of Alexandria, martyred in about 307 A.D., is identified in this panel by her attributes - the wheel (reduced to a brooch), the sword, of which only the pommel is visible, and the palm branch, in her left hand. This image of St. Catherine was once the left panel of an altarpiece, the central panel of which, depicting a Madonna and Child, is today in Orvieto, Italy.
