Alfred Sisley
The Slopes of Bougival   1875

oil on canvas
50.2 x 59.7 cm
Purchased 1953
National Gallery of Canada (no. 6094)

Sisley rarely painted figures or portraits, preferring landscape views along the Seine and its environs. Bougival is situated downriver and west of Paris on the bank of the Seine. In the nineteenth century, it was a small village that attracted pleasure-seeking Parisians by offering pastimes of dancing, swimming, and boating.
