Lancret was a prolific draughtsman whose surviving drawings are mostly studies of the human figure dressed in the elaborate costumes of the day. Like his mentor, Watteau, he too was a painter of "fêtes galantes", in which one often sees musicians such as this guitar player, their presence in these idyllic scenes emblematic of life's pleasures.
