Paul Cézanne
Forest   c. 1902-1904

oil on canvas
81.9 x 66 cm
Purchased 1950
National Gallery of Canada (no. 5770)

Using a wide brush, Cézanne deposited large patches of paint on the surface to depict the different elements of the forest. This was a landscape he knew well, close to Aix-en-Provence, and he had analysed it fully in order to choose the perfect hues. He remarked: "Technique grows in contact with nature. It consists in seeking to express what one feels, in organizing sensations into personal aesthetics."
