This recent work by Robert Davidson is a continuation of the artist¿s exploration and abstraction of traditional Haïda forms in various media. Davidson is well known for his abstract artwork on paper and canvas and in wood. Cut by a water-jet process, the aluminum evokes the cut outs used in making appliquéd blankets and is a relatively new material for the artist. "Supernatural Eye" features the Haïda form line and primary design elements seen in traditional Haïda art: the ovoid, u-form, and the tri-neg ¿ a three-pointed shape that the artist uses here and has explored in previous works. This work is unusual in that the form line also serves as the structure and that some of the elements exist only in the negative space. "Supernatural Eye" expands on the established vocabulary of the supernatural realm within Haïda mythology.
