Nina Overbeck, née Hartl - Study for the Figure of Ruth   1818

graphite on wove paper
22.2 x 21.1 cm
Purchased 2007
National Gallery of Canada (no. 42058r)

In this drawing, Overbeck¿s new wife Nina models for the drawing "Ruth and Boas", which the artist sent from Rome to his parents in Lübeck so they could see what she looked like. On the back is a study for the allegorical figure "Jerusalem Delivered" for the Casino Massimo. Both demonstrate Overbeck¿s precision and directness when working from the live model.
