Clarence Gagnon
Evening on the North Shore   1924

oil on canvas
77 x 81.6 cm
Purchased 1925
National Gallery of Canada (no. 3178)

The north shore of the St. Lawrence River near Baie-Saint-Paul in Charlevoix County was a primary source of pictorial inspiration for Clarence Gagnon. This view across the bay at once highlights the beauty of a still relatively untouched natural environment and, by including in the foreground the picturesque traditional houses, the strong bonds between the land and its inhabitants.
