Annibale Carracci
A Lute Player and Other Studies   before 1595

pen and brown ink with brown wash on brownish-green laid paper
28.6 x 23.1 cm
Purchased 1911
National Gallery of Canada (no. 279r)

This drawing was recently removed from its irregularly shaped backing to reveal a number of new drawings. The main study of a tailor on the verso finds parallels in genre paintings by the Carracci family. The sketches provide examples of the informality and spontaneous creativity of the Carracci drawing style in recording their surroundings with a perceptive if condescending eye. The sheet was one of the first to enter the National Gallery of Canada with the initial acquisition of European drawings in 1911.
