An article about Fritz Brandtner?s Men of 1939, part of the Canadian Painting in the Thirties exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Canada. Brandtner exhibited his drawings in a 1936 show organized by the Canadian League Against War and Fascism. Dr. Norman Bethune, Brandtner?s first patron, organized a Children?s Art Centre with Brandtner and Marion Scott. Brandtner taught children of the working class and in hospitals. Progressive works such as Brandtner?s Men of 1939 aimed at serving the people during the Depression. Illustrated with a black and white reproduction of Men of 1939.
